Please ask your child’s teacher what his/her students will be required to learn for the week (cf. the different levels for Scripture and Catechism). Extra credit may be offered at the teacher’s discretion.
An important note on the hymn-verses:
We are memorizing four hymns this year— one per quarter. We sing the hymn-verses together at various times throughout the week, but students are not required to recite or sing them as part of their Friday memory recitation.
7 Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses’ face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end, 8 will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory? 9 For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory.
– 2 Corinthians 3:7-9
Level 1: v. 9 — Level 2: vv. 7-9
The Third Commandment
Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
What does this mean?
We should fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it.
Level 1: commandment — Level 2: commandment & meaning
“Salvation Unto Us Has Come” (LSB 555), vv. 2-3
2. What God did in His Law demand
And none to Him could render
Caused wrath and woe on ev’ry hand
For man, the vile offender.
Our flesh has not those pure desires
The spirit of the Law requires,
And lost is our condition.
3. It was a false, misleading dream
That God His Law had given
That sinners could themselves redeem
And by their works gain heaven.
The Law is but a mirror bright
To bring the inbred sin to light
That lurks within our nature.
